Here we grow again…

Exciting news!

Several months ago Sandy and I invited Brandy Maslowski of Quilter On Fire to join us as an organizer of QuiltTalk. She is such an outgoing dynamic person, brimming with enthusiasm for all things quilty, and is a perfect fit with us. Find out more about Brandy here. We are thrilled that Brandy will be taking the lead from now on, and Sandy and I will be stepping back. We will still be there, in the background helping out when needed- w are all brimming with exciting ideas to share with you moving forward!

Never fear, quiltTalk will continue to bring leaders in the quilting industry via ZOOM. We will be sending the link to the new website soon, but for now you can still register for upcoming talks through The link for Kimberly is available now, and Jean Impey’s talk will be available soon. We’ll let you know when you can register for her talk as soon as it is available, and give you a sneak peek into who is coming in early 2022.

See what quilts Anna Maria has made with her fabric lines.. definitely swoon worthy!

We are excited that Kimberly Einmo will be with us January 19th 7:30 pm Eastern time. Her topic is Creative Spaces, and he will be giving us a quilt studio tour of many well-known quilt designers, filled with tips and suggestions. Anna Maria Horner

We are SO excited to present Anna Maria Horner. She is a true creative- quilt designer, shop owner, and probably best known for her unique line of fabric designs.

She uses bold colours and an interesting mix of designs and patterns to create instantly recognizable fabrics. Come see what she is up to now!

Below is the Eventbrite link. We are expecting a full house- get your ticket before they sell out!

More ZOOMing in October!

Kathy Doughty will be presenting in just one week (Wednesday September 29th 2021).. have you got your ticket yet? Her workshop is in two weeks (Wednesday October 6th 2021), and a few spaces remain. We expect to sell out after her talk, so don’t wait! Tickets here.

Kathy lives and works in Australia, and we are thrilled to host her here on quiltTalk. She creates bold, original designs using her own unique pattern lines, which feature plants and animals specific to Australia.  Check out this cool cushion kit, sold through her shop. I can’t wait to see her latest projects.. drooling already!

In October (Wednesday October 13th 2021) we also will be featuring Karla Overland of Cherrywood Fabrics. This hand-dyed fabric is fabulous.. feels like suede, doesn’t fray, truly gorgeous colours. You might even win some!

A few years ago Karla started an amazing series of challenges. She puts together a collection of 4-6 fabrics, and challenges you to be creative. All quilts are limited to the same size, colour palette, and theme- from Van Gogh to Diana. It is truly amazing how much variety and breathtaking beauty erupts! This has been so hugely popular that she has several travelling shows circulating every year.

I was the principal organizer of Quilts at the Creek, an outdoor quilt show that ran for 8 years in Toronto, and was thrilled to bring one of Karla’s series of Prince quilts to the show. They were spectacular! And I have one other connection with Cherrywood fabrics… I designed a quilt for them, which is now available through her website as a pattern or as a kit. Check it out.. so proud!

Last but definitely not least, I will be opening up registration for Anna Maria Horner’s presentation (scheduled for November 19th 2021) in a day or two.. so check it out.

Zen Chic follow up

For those of you who missed Brigitte’s talk yesterday, it was fabulous. We were so lucky to be able to schedule her, as she is VERY busy designing fabric, building patterns- she even does her own styling photos! Because there is a 6 hour time difference with her in Germany and me here in eastern Canada, it was an 11am start time. But that early start didn’t stop people from logging on. At least one person, Brandy Maslowski, tuned in all the way from British Columbia. Brandy helped curate the question period for us after the talk- thanks, Brandy!

Here are some bits and pieces of information from Brigitte’s presentation yesterday. Her website:

Moda palette builder: I had trouble finding the link to this, but found something similar under play crafts, link here: I grabbed a photo of a neighbour’s garden which I LOVE, and uploaded it. Here are the results. You can move the dots around to try different colours. Pretty fabulous, and a new way to think about what colours you might want to use.
I saw some fabulous fabrics that Brigitte had designed, and there was some discussion about where to get it in Canada. I did a quick google search for Moda Fabrics Canada, and that was a wonderful way to spend half an hour! There are a lot of quilt shops out there that sell Moda and Zen Chic, but here is the first hit I got: a shop in BC called Dinkydoo. This seems a good place to start if you are looking for something specific. I especially like  Even More Paper, which is available for pre-order.
I was so impressed with Brigitte’s styling tips, that I took one of Sandy Lindal’s quilts (Sandy of quiltTalk and ScrappyGalQuiltCo,) and played with backgrounds for it. Love it! This is a quilt that she offers to guilds as a block of the month challenge, called Scrap Sewciety. If you think your guild might be interested, email Sandy directly.
Thanks for being a part of quiltTalk! Remember, we have some great talks coming up in September.. check them out if you haven’t booked your place yet!

And we have added a workshop with Kathy Doughty for October 6th. Spaces are filling fast, so sign up soon!

Workshop Fun

Everyone who took Gillian’s Interchange Applique workshop enjoyed it tremendously.. and waiting one week between learning her techniques and meeting via zoom to show and discuss our work was the perfect amount of time. Enough time to find your supplies, explore the techniques, and just enough to feel a little pressure to work on your piece!

Here are some of the pieces that people worked on..

I sm looking forward to playing more with this.. the pieces are fast and easy to make.. so satisfying! Thanks Gillian for leading this workshop, and the participants who forwarded their work!

What is happening at quiltTalk?

Gillian Travis’ presentation last week was SO inspiring, and some people were interested in workshops with her. I have created a survey to see if we have enough participants to run one. Those of you who missed her talk can also participate… her is the link to the survey. Survey is open for one week, so complete it soon!*|UNIQID|*

We are on hiatus in June because we want you to check out the offerings at Quilt Canada.. this is a virtual show, and talks will be recorded so you can watch them when they fit your schedule and time zone! There are also workshops, and virtual quilt tours. See what Canada has to offer!

Brandy Maslowski will be presenting in July, and speaking about behind the scenes of quilt travel… just in time for most of us to start dreaming of travel again. She is a quilter, blogger, podcaster and more, so there should be lots to inspire all of us. Got a friend who loves quilting, but doesn’t know about quiltTalk? When you register for Brandy’s presentation we will send you a link to give a friend $5- off.. perfect for those who haven’t participated yet! Register here for Brandy’s talk.

Who doesn’t know and love Zen Chic? Brigitte is a modern quilter with a wonderful aesthetic- seemingly endless ideas for quilts too. I love them all and want to make them all. She generously shares her ideas, has great quilt alongs, free patterns, and wonderful fabric. Let’s meet the person behind the name! Register here for Brigitte.

Registration is now open for Luke Haynes presentation in September. This is an event that you should not miss! Check out his work, and register here.
